OpenGov Remote Inspections

As lead designer on this project, I guided the feature strategy and UI design for this feature to enable remote inspections.

The Project

During the crazy year that 2019 was, building inspections still needed to happen in a timely manner. Many communities were performing inspections by manually creating and sending out Zoom links or using FaceTime.

We wanted to make this a more seamless experience for inspectors right in the OpenGov permitting application.

Process

I scheduled several conversations with customers to find out which solutions might be most helpful for them. We landed on building a Zoom integration first as most customers had at least used Zoom at some point.

As communication of scheduled inspections was key to this feature, I also presented some email wireframes to make sure we were presenting the most important information to customers.

Final Designs

While there was a ton of behind the scenes effort by engineering to get this feature out the door, the impact to the interface was actually quite minimal. We were able to insert calls-to-action about zoom meetings right into existing workflows.

Outcomes

This feature ended up being a hit with customers and allowed them to safely perform inspections right from their office. It also has long-term benefit because smaller follow-up inspections don't need to be in person anymore.
